A three-day seminar on gender, the family, and the social sciences will be held in June of 2008 at Princeton University. The seminar will explore the ways in which gender differences shape contemporary parenthood, marriage, and sex; it will also explore the social and legal implications of these differences from a range of perspectives. The seminar will be directed by W. Bradford Wilcox (Sociology, University of Virginia). Paula England (Sociology, Stanford), Sara McLanahan (Sociology, Princeton), Rob Palkovitz (Psychology, Delaware), Steven Rhoads (Politics, Virginia), and Robin Wilson (Law, Washington and Lee) will also help lead the seminar. A number of guest speakers will also address the seminar, including Kay Hymowitz (Manhattan Institute).
Participants: Graduate students and recent Ph.D. graduates in Sociology, Economics, Psychology, Political Science, Family Sciences, and related disciplines who are interested in the institution of the family are invited to apply (though preference will be given to those who are currently graduate students). Selection is competitive with an anticipated enrollment of sixteen. There is a $25 registration fee, however room/board and tuition on campus will be provided. Travel is not included but scholarships for travel are available to those who demonstrate financial need.
Qualifications: Interest in the study of American family life, especially the study of marriage and the family as institutions.
Activities: The seminar will combine lectures on central aspects of contemporary family life in the United States with intensive discussions between students and faculty. Students will be expected to read materials (to be announced) prior to coming to the seminar.

Deadline: Materials must be received by Thursday, April 10, 2008. Admitted students will be notified by Monday, April 21.
